Places to visit in KyivKyivo-Pecherska LavraLavra means monastery -it s the oldest Orthodox Cave monastry in Ukraine, foundd in the 11 th century, that attracts thousands of piligrims and monks. The architectural ensemble attained completion in the mid-18th century. The majority of the structures is built in the Ukrainian Baroque style. Nowadays it is a UNESCO heritagewith lots of tourists visiting. PodilPodol district of Kiev is very popular for its special atmosphere, many bars, cafes, restaurants. proximity to the river and sightseeing points. It was destroyed by floods, fire,enemies and planned to be demolished but it never disappeared. Near Poshtova Plosha there is the river station where boats depart for sightseeing tours and the funicular can take you back uptown. St. Sophia CathedralIt was constructed in early 11th century and at that time was a mighty impressive complex. Inside you ll find amazing mosaics and frescoes, some of wich also had to be restored. In one of the altars there is a white sarcophagus with remains of yeroslav the Wise and his wife Iryna. Khreschatyk StreetThe center of the city is khreschatyk Street, which follows the bottom of a small valley, laced on the sides with beautiful grdens interspersed with tall, modern office and appartment buildings. Greenery of the gardens, trees lining the street, squares that intersect all, combined with the variegated clors of brick, red and gray granites, and decorative ceramic tiles give Khreschatyk an attractive and colorful portrayal. Golden GateThe fortified wall, defining the limits of the city and serving as a protective barrier from invaders in the past centuries, dates back to 1037, the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The place was restored to its present condition in 1983, and it now serves as the Golden Gate historical museum. Andreevski SpuskAndreevski Spusk is the Montmarte of Kiev. There is a markey of arts and crafts on the steep street. Mikhail Bulgakov lived in the Turbin house on Andreevski Spusk for more than a decade. National Treasures MuseumMuseum exposition displays highly artistic items made from platinum, gold, silver and decorated with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and other precious stones. Exposition includes collections of Scythiam gold, artistic wares of Samathian tribes, jewels of ancient Slavs and the time of Kievan Rus, wares of Byzantine and Iranian craftsman. Mariynsky PalaceThe gorgeous blue and cream palace was built under the supervision of the Russian architect Ivan Michurin. The plase is located on top of a hill in a beautiful park overlooking the Dnipro river. The magnificent building was used as a Kiev residence of the Tsar s family. Taday the palace is used for official state receptions such as presidential meetings and international conferences. |
